Your heart is at risk when you fill your daily food intake with foods that are high in cholesterol. You hear more and more often about heart disease these days, but did you know that regular consumption of certain foods containing trans fats and saturated fats can actually cause it? Foods like the fast foods that Americans love so much and tasty baked treats are harbingers of trans fats while animal proteins and dairy are full of saturated fats.

A traditional breakfast can be made healthy

Whether boiled, scrambled or in an omelet, served at breakfast, lunch or dinner, eggs are a regular choice. The fact that they are rich in cholesterol should come as no surprise. Eggs contain the majority of the recommended daily intake of cholesterol. This is just one egg, so eating eggs should be done sparingly for sure. When it comes to egg whites, not only do they taste better, but they are much healthier, if dressed.

The burger mania makes for an early grave

Americans today seem to have been born with a hamburger in their hands. Whether for lunch or dinner, hamburgers are the easiest choice. However, it is a most unfortunate common occurrence, because the good old hamburger overflows with cholesterol. They can be anywhere from a third to one half of your daily allotment of cholesterol foods. If you add insult to injury and add French fries or milk shake or both you are way over the top for the day. Being that animal protein has a heavy amount of saturated fats a better choice, other than salad, might be veggie burger on whole grain bread or taco perhaps. Eating meat with bread is really hard for your body to digest. One preferable course of action would be for you to eat either the meat or the bread.

Ease your comfort food guilt with some healthy tips

What kid doesn’t love macaroni and cheese? But, when it is prepared in the traditional way, it will swim in cholesterol. You could use low-fat cheese and skim milk to reduce the cholesterol level. Pasta is another comfort food that you can turn into healthier food by replacing the heavily processed white wheat pasta with whole wheat pasta. Pasta and meat put together is nothing but bad news for your cholesterol and digestive system. Instead you should try a more sensible combination, like pasta and vegetables.

If you feel like eating a good old steak for supper, it is better if you go for lean cuts, such as round steaks, rump or sirloin. Fatty cuts like rib eyes are not recommendable since they are incredibly heavy in cholesterol. Eat your steak with a nice big salad and green vegetables rather than white potatoes or other sugar vegetables and no bread. Seafood is very healthy but even among fish there are high levels of cholesterol like in lobster. Chicken is a good choice but stick with white meat and don’t let it fall into the deep fryer.

Dessert:

Although a hard thing to do, it is better if you try to stay away from ice cream and baked goods as much as possible. Instead of a sweet tooth, try growing a fresh fruit tooth and you’ll be the happier for it. Processing desserts is never a walk in the park for your digestive system. So try not to saddle it with too much, too soon. Desserts should be served a good while after the meal is finished, and followed by another space of time when it can be digested properly. When it comes to quantity, in the case of desserts less is always better. So if you’re not sure you can stop yourself from licking the plate, you could try sharing it. This way not only will you be able to reduce calories but the cholesterol intake as well.
