I love going out and enjoying myself and occasionally getting a little drunk. However I HATE hangovers. This article gives some tips that I have found to help cure the After Morning Blues.
If you wake up feeling a little dazed, confused and upset with yourself then you probably drunk too much last night! The ultimate fact is that you have done something very bad to your body and full recovery is rarely achievable with a quick fix. However there are a few things that you could try to ease your pain.
- Drink water, and lot’s of it!
This is the most obvious tip but some people think there is an art to this. When you get home, however much alcohol you have drank, drink an equal amount of water. Then drink some more at 5 in the morning when you wake up to pee! In fact just keep sipping water for the whole of the next day! - Get some more sleep
your body needs to repair itself. Sleep is the most productive time for the body to repair itself. If you are supposed to be going to work, you may be better off calling in sick. - Drink a bottle of sports energy drink, such as Powerade, with a dose of pain killers(Please note, Daniel who commented below noted that pain killers could be a bad option!! Aspirin may be safer at a push!)
A Pharmacist gave me this remedy when I stumbled into the pharmacy one morning and begged for help. It worked as best as could be expected and I was able to continue my day. Alternatively you can try mixing half fresh orange juice / half water and a teaspoon of of salt into a glass. Your body needs to replenish salt and vitamins lost from the evening before plus the pain killer will hide the headache. - Eat a healthy but full breakfast
Sapped of energy you are probably craving a large fried breakfast. Resist the urge but take some note. Have a full breakfast maybe some granola with milk, a few slices of whole wheat toast and lots of fruit. You will really appreciate it. - If you really need to throw up, don’t hold it in!
Your body is obviously telling you something. Just go to the bathroom, wallow in self pity and let it all out. You don’t need it in you and it will probably be mostly the devils water from the night before. - Take Emergen-C or something similar
You can buy these little vitamin shots in Powder form. Just mix it up with a glass of cold water and drink it up. You lose a lot of B Vitamins when you drink so this will replace them and you 1000mg of trusty vitamin C. - Keep eating fruit, especially bananas
You probably crave sugar, well you are in luck. Fruit is full of it and it is slow releasing to help bring your body back up to full energy. Bananas are one of the best as they are also high in magnesium which helps with the headache and have a natural antacid to help calm your stomach.
Please let us know of any more that you know…. I am sure most of us have been in that desperate situation where we need as many tips as possible.

The bananas always worked for me. But I try to avoid the need!
Bananas are definitely a “super fruit” and can do all sorts of good. I may have to write about it at some point but one thing I love about bananas is the different kinds of energy you can get from them depending on what stage of ripening they are in.
When I drank…and when I drank I really really drank, I would keep Alka Seltzer Plus cold tablets by my bed, and I never went to sleep until I had a mug of water by the bed. In the morning I wouldn’t even open my eyes, would just feel around for that packet, rip it open and drop the tablets in the mug. When the fizzing stopped I would sit up just enough to drink it down, then lay back again for 30 minutes. At the end of that time I was fit as a fiddle.
I will be 10 years sober next May. I can honestly say I have enjoyed not having to worry about alcohol, though I don’t know if I will continue without it for the rest of my life. For now it works for me to not deal with that particular demon, though.
Good luck to all of you!
Oops, forgot to check the little box down there!
I always forget to get some water in me before I go to sleep, so wake up with a very dry mouth and sore head. A greasy breakfast and plenty of liquids helps me out loads.
do not, i repeat DO NOT use Tylenol if there is alcohol in your system. that is terrible advice. you risk serious and sometimes critical liver damage. taking acetaminophen and alcohol together overwhelms the liver’s ability to remove toxins from your bloodstream, and if you do this enough, take too much tylenol, or haven’t eaten anything for a while, you’re actually treading pretty close to liver failure. which is pretty shitty.
anyway, TERRIBLE advice. aspirin is an arguably safe substitute, but obviously taking anything over minimal dosages of painkillers with alcohol isn’t a good idea to begin with.
Energy drinks are really good because they replace electrolytes that are lost when you get wrecked!
cool post
Hey Brenda, thanks a million… Maybe I neglected to talk about the evils of alcohol. I certainly feel I have a grip on it and these serious hang overs are few and far between. If I want one drink, I have one drink….. If this control slips then sober is the only way to go.
Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope you come back soon.
No problem…. I have left this oops comment many times
Ha ha, I love the image from On The Buses!! I live in Montreal but am originally from London!!
Yep I have made the decision to not have any water many times…. always a bad thing to do.
A greasy breakfast is amazing… I used to love Egg, Sausage, Chips and Beans after.. but I am a vegetarian now! And also a healthy breakfast with good carbs is the best ways to go.
Hey Daniel…. This was a very bad assumption on my part. I am from England and was originally told by the pharmacy to take Paracetemol, which I have not seen anywhere here!
Anyway I am very thankful of your comment and have put a note in the post…. Please visit again and correct my awful mistakes!!
Powerade has definitely been a life saver for me
Thanks a million for stopping by…
Puking has to be the absolute best and worst feeling in the world when you have one of those “serious” hangovers that make you physically sick to your stomach.
I haven’t had one in a while…and even though I’m sure it’s good to eat bananas, well, I guess it would make the puke taste better! LOL!
I know that I have felt at the lowest point of my life when having my head hanging over a toilet bowl… definitely a point when I feel really sorry for myself
Banana puke is the best, hands down
howdy again. thanks for the reply; i didn’t honestly expect it, which probably explains why i was so harsh. i had a friend in med school give me a stern talking to one night after i went for a bottle of Tylenol for my throbbing brain. basically, i had no idea, so who am i to fault you for not knowing. it’s a good thing to keep in mind though, considering painkillers are actually lifesavers after a few drinks, considering you use the right ones, of course.
take care, and kudos for diligence! it’s pretty rare on the internet these days.
Hey, it’s your right to be harsh and I really appreciate it…. It’s a good lesson to me with this new blog NOT to write with assumptions in mind!
Thank you very much for your input.
